The Five Habits of Lifelong Readers
We focus on building readers, not just for a year, but for a lifetime! This is my passion! This is why I am here! In each class period, your student will spend some time reading books that they choose on their own. We read books, we discuss books, and we share books with each other in order to practice the habits that lifelong readers follow.
1. Lifelong readers dedicate time to read. Reading is not just an "if I have time" event. When something is important to us, we will dedicate time to that activity.
2. Lifelong readers successfully self select reading material. Lifelong readers "have the experience and skills to choose books successfully that meet their interests, needs, and reading abilities." (Strauss, Washington Post)
3. Lifelong readers share books and reading with other readers. We like to talk about what we read. When we talk about what we read, it tends to make us want to read more. We do this through our Biblionasium accounts and book talks during class. Click the link below to go to my YouTube collection of book trailers! Something happened over the summer, and my book trailer list was lost, but I am in the process of rebuilding it.

4. Lifelong readers have reading plans. We don't wait until we finish a book to figure out what we are reading next. We keep a list of books that we plan to read in our Reader's Response notebooks to take the guesswork out of reading time!
5. Lifelong readers show preferences for genres, authors, and topics. Yes, we want students to experience a variety of texts, but ultimately, this is all about finding what they prefer to read. In order to do this, we have to experience different genres to gain the experience needed to know what is right for us!
