No Spelling test this week! We are studying homophones this week. Students will work on multiple activities to practice using these tricky words correctly.
Test your student's knowledge by asking them to use the following homophones in sentences. In order to know they have used the correct version of the homophone, they must be able to replace the homophone with the proof words.
they're = Proof: they are (contraction)
there = Proof: here or there (location)
their = Proof: his or her (shows ownership)
its = Proof: his or her (shows ownership)
it's = Proof: it is (contraction)
your = Proof: his or her (shows ownership)
you're = Proof: you are (contraction)
two = Proof: any other number (the number 2)
too = Proof: so or also (in addition or superfluous)
to = Proof: process of elimination - not a number, not so or also (direction or limit)
we're = Proof: we are or we were(contraction)
were = Proof: are (plural past tense of am)
where = Proof: here (location)
our = Proof: your (belonging to us)
are = Proof: were (present tense being verb)

How will Spelling work this year?
As a parent, you may be wondering how Spelling is going to work this year in 4th grade. So here's how it works!
1) Each Thursday, we will take a Spelling test over the previous week's words.
2) We will also take a pre-test over the next week's words. We will review these in class and figure out which words we still need to work on for the following week.
3) We will build our list from those words plus other words that contain skills that we need to study based on the Spelling Inventory we took at the beginning of the school year.
Here's what you need to know:
Since our lists are COMPLETELY individualized, I will not be able to provide a list for you. It will be your student's responsibility to record their words in their Reading notebooks behind the pink Spelling tab to study.
